The Saanich–Gulf Islands riding is home to a rich and ecologically diverse coastal island landscape, surrounded by the Salish Sea. Oil tanker traffic and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) pipeline projects are some of the concerns of residents in the riding.
The rich marine life in the area includes the J, K and L pods of resident orcas, or killer whales, the ultimate predators of the world’s oceans. Every individual orca in these pods has been identified so that researchers and whale watchers can keep track of their unique black and white markings, identities, ages, family relationships and vocalizations.
