Bordered by Bathurst Street to the West, Highway 404 to the east, Elgin Mills Road West to the north and the 407 to the south, Richmond Hill also features the Don River East, German Mills Creek, Beaver Creek and the Rouge River running through the riding. It is also dotted with a number of municipal parks.

Residents of Richmond Hill have access to a number of community centres, athletic fields and galleries to enjoy. The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts is also located in the riding and there are almost 150km of trails in Richmond Hill for residents to use.
Canadian author Farley Mowat and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne both grew up in Richmond Hill. A number of athletes, from figure skater Elvis Stojko to NHL star Connor McDavid, also grew up and began their careers here.

The area that would become present day Richmond Hill was used by indigenous peoples for centuries prior to European exploration and settlement. Once settlers began to inhabit the area in the late 1700s, the area began to be referred to as Miles Hill, after Abner and James Miles, who would be important in the development of local commerce. It was renamed in the 1820s to its present designation although there are conflicting explanations as to why Richmond Hill was chosen.
