Closed in 1982 by Brian Mulroney, then-president of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, Schefferville is again producing iron ore. There are millions of tons of iron ore in the area, awaiting market recovery.
Rising demand for the Stimpson’s surf clam and the Minganie scallop, especially from Asia, have been a major boost to the commercial fishing and processing markets.
Entrepreneurs are using the area’s unique flora and fauna and turning them into business opportunities. Items such as pine needle honey, cloudberry ice cream, checkerberry jam and even northern aromatics for new gins are being manufactured and shipped out.
Manufacturing, retail trade as well as health care and social services sectors are large employers.
