The riding has many outdoor recreational parks and golf courses, especially along the North Saskatchewan River.
The Rexall Centre was home of the Edmonton Oilers for 42 years (1974 - 2016). Many great Oilers played here, including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, and Jari Kurri. The Stanley Cup was hoisted here in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. The last NHL game played here was between the Oilers and Vancouver Canucks on April 6, 2016.
Construction and retail trade are the riding’s top industries.
Traditionally, Edmonton has been at the center of Canada’s oil sector, and thus nicknamed the “Oil Capital of Canada.” It is the closest major city to the oilsands, which makes it the main service centre for the industry.
The city encourages and makes it easy for residents to use public transportation.
Edmonton was one of three Canadian cities competing in the World Wildlife Fund’s annual Earth Hour City Challenge. In 2016, Edmonton decreased its power consumption by approximately 2.5% during Earth Hour.
The riding is named after Maj.-Gen. William Antrobus Griesbach. He was a First World War and Boer War soldier, the youngest mayor of Edmonton, and member of the House of Commons and Senate.
In recognition of Ukrainian culture in Alberta, the Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta opened in the riding. About 13% of the riding identify as Ukrainian.
