Cardigan’s economy has traditionally relied on industries such as agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. With the closure of the Georgetown Sawmill, a new business park will be developed in its place. The hope is to attract new businesses and investments, as well as create jobs in the areas of manufacturing and marine technologies.
Commercial fisheries and sport fishermen must adhere to a quota system, which has been proven to be successful, as seen by the increase in tuna in the past 15 years.

Lord Selkirk arrived on Prince Edward Island in 1803, bringing 800 Scottish settlers with him. Scottish culture remains very important to the people of Cardigan. The Selkirk Scottish Heritage Center is located here and Selkirk Provincial Park hosts the Prince Edward Island Highland Games.
