The Strait of Canso Port is a large, ice-free port used for international trade. The port is an important part of the economy not only for the export and import of goods, but also as a provider of over 1,400 jobs.
Historically, coal mining was the main industry in the riding. With its decline, other industries have risen, including oil refining and pulp and paper. Tourism, fishing, and agriculture are also important contributors to the economic wellbeing of the riding.
