In 2013 the town of Magog introduced a plan to reduce greenhouse gases. It proceeded to replace oil heating at the municipal garage with electricity, using LEDs for its traffic lights, reducing the lighting in public buildings by as much as 50% and limiting the use of pesticides on public property.
The Green Mountains Nature Reserve (GMNR), at 17,300 acres, is Quebec’s largest protected area on private territory. Operated by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the hiking trails on the Mont Sutton section have been mapped by Google. The reserve is home to 20 species of at-risk plants, several birds of prey including the barred owl, and mammals such as the black bear, bobcat, and moose.
