Artist A.Y. Jackson painted several landscapes in the Baie-Saint-Paul area in the 1920s. River St. Urbain, Winter Morning, and Barns are his best-known works from the area. Clarence Gagnon, Arthur Lismer, René Richard, Jean-Paul Lemieux, Marc-Aurèle Fortin, G-E Tremblay, Simone-Marie Bouchard, Yvonne and Blanche Bolduc are some of the 20th-century artists who worked there, and it continues to attract big names in contemporary art every year.
In 1997, Quebec businessman Paul Desmarais began construction of multi-million-dollar mansion on his 21,000-acre estate in Charlevoix. Known as Le Domaine Laforest or Sagard, the property includes a salmon stream, an 18-hole golf course, a bronze replica of Rodin’s The Thinker, and a heli-port. It sees a constant stream of rich and famous guests, and residents make a game of guessing who is flying in and out at any given time when they hear helicopters overhead.
